Acne systems provide you with a complete acne treatment regiment, including cleansers, medicated creams, lotions or gels and moisturizer. Some systems may include exfoliating products or masks. With so many acne systems on the market, knowing which one is right for your skin can be difficult, whether you're looking online, watching an infomercial or shopping in your local drugstore.

Acne systems provide you with several products designed to work together to clear up your skin. Typically one or more components in the system will contain either salicyclic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Some systems may include both active ingredients, and may include sulfur, retinols or alpha hydroxy acids, like Neutrogena's Advanced Solutions Complete Acne Therapy System. Salicyclic acid work well on noninflammatory acne and helps to exfoliate the skin and unclog the pores, according to AcneNet. Benzoyl peroxide reduces the amount of the P. acnes bacteria on the skin, and is effective against various types of breakouts.

The best-known acne treatment system on the market is the Proactiv system. This acne regimen is sold online and through mail order, relying upon infomercials on television to promote the product. Other common acne regimens include Neutrogena's Complete Acne Therapy and AcneFree. Unlike Proactiv, these products are available in your local drug or discount store. Prices for these acne treatment kits range from less than $20 for a month's supply to more than $30 for the same amount of product as of 2010.

Time Frame

Most acne treatment systems are designed for twice daily use. Typically, you will need to wash your face with the cleanser, apply toner, if used, then medicated lotions. Moisturizer or a moisturizer containing sunscreen is the final step in your skin care routine. Once your skin clears, you will need to continue to use your acne regimen to prevent a recurrence of acne.

Different acne regimens include different products. Depending upon your skin, you may not find that the packaged system offers everything you need. AcneFree and Proactiv include a cleanser, toner and treatment lotion. If you opt for one of these systems, you will probably need to purchase a separate moisturizer. The Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Complete Acne Therapy System does not include a toner, but does include a moisturizer with sunscreen.

Both benzoyl peroxide and salicyclic acid can be drying or cause redness and irritation. If you have sensitive skin, you may find that you should gradually increase the amount and frequency of treatment products to help your skin's tolerance. A good oil-free moisturizer can prevent most of these side effects, recommends Proactiv offers moisturizers when you purchase the treatment system, or you can pick up an oil-free moisturizer at your local drugstore.
