Acne is a skin condition that is characterized by pimples, cysts and abscesses that develop on your face, chest, shoulders or back. According to the Merck Manuals, acne is caused by the accumulation of bacteria, dried sebum and dead skin cells that block the hair follicles in your skin. It occurs when your hormones, skin oils and bacteria interact and inflame the pores in your skin. Treatment may include topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics and a healthy diet. Knowing which foods trigger an acne outbreak may help you ward off this unpleasant skin condition.

Seafood

Seafood, such as oysters, crab, lobster and shrimp are rich in iodine, a nutrient that can trigger acne outbreaks and interfere with acne treatment when consumed in excess.

Trans Fats

Foods may with trans fats can cause inflammation and trigger an outbreak of acne. Processed foods like taco shells, glazed donuts, margarine, shortening, popcorn made with soybean oil, potato chips fried in a mixture of oils, snack crackers made with cottonseed oil, refined coconut oil or soybean oil and chocolate-chip cookies made with cottonseed and/or soybean oil.

Refined Sugars

If you want to avoid an acne outbreak, avoid or reduce your consumption of refined sugars. According to the website PlanetGreen.com, foods that are produced with refined sugars can increase your insulin and male hormone levels, which can inflame your skin and cause acne. Foods high in refined sugar include bagels, bread, candy, cereals, cake, cookies, doughnuts, muffins and pasta.

Milk

Almost all milk products contain calcium and some hormones. The calcium and hormone combination can trigger an acne outbreak, according to Dr. Alan Logan, MD, author of Clear Skin Diet. The website PlanetGreen.com states that the exact relationship between milk and acne is unknown at this time, but non-organic milk is loaded with antibiotics, hormones and additives, which can cause inflammation in the body.
