Coffee can cause you to urinate frequently. It's not just coffee that can cause frequent urination, but caffeine in general can cause you to have a sudden urge that sends you to the restroom. No set amount of caffeine will cause frequent urination, as everyone's system responds to caffeine differently. You may be more sensitive to caffeine than your partner, friends or relatives.

Coffee contains a high amount of caffeine; even decaffeinated coffee still contains a small amount of caffeine. Caffeine works as a diuretic, which makes you urinate. The more coffee you drink, the more you'll urinate as your body tries to rid itself of all the caffeine. MayoClinic.com recommends keeping a close eye on how much caffeine you consume each day, as some sweets and snacks contain caffeine, too. If you're consuming 500 to 600 mg of caffeine per day, it suggests that you try to cut down on your caffeine intake.

Effects

Too much caffeine can cause a variety of problems including frequent urination. It can also cause you to feel anxiety, tension, stress, headaches and restlessness, according to MayoClinic.com. This can happen because caffeine also works as a stimulant of your central nervous system. If you have heart problems, you may want to especially watch your caffeine consumption as it can increase your heart rate.

Types

How much caffeine is in regular and decaffeinated coffee can vary depending upon brand name. A 16-oz. cup of coffee can contain over 200 mg of caffeine and a generic 8-oz. cup of coffee can contain as little as 95 mg of caffeine or as much as 200 mg. An 8-oz. cup of decaffeinated coffee can have 2 to 12 mg of caffeine. If you can't switch from regular to decaf right away, try slowly mixing it into your regular coffee until you've made a complete switch.

Considerations

Avoid drinking large amounts of caffeine if you experience frequent urination. According to MedlinePlus, urinating more than 2.5 liters per day is excessive. If you drink coffee or other caffeine beverages before bed, you may have to wake up during the night to urinate. The average adult should be able to sleep for six to eight hours without waking to urinate.
