Acne is a skin condition in which inflamed red lesions such as pustules, papules and cysts occur. Blackheads and whiteheads are also considered acne. Acne is often called pimples. Acne forms when the pores on the face become clogged, and several different things can cause the pores to become clogged.

Oil

When too much oil is produced, acne can occur. Too much oil can clog the pores. This can also occur as a blackhead or whitehead ruptures, according to MedlinePlus. When they rupture, the material inside of them, including bacteria and oil, can cause inflammation by spreading to the surrounding areas. If the inflammation is deep within the skin, painful cysts can form if the pimples become enlarged.

Inflammation

Inflammation not only causes facial acne, but it also determines the type of acne a person has. When inflammation is minimal, a blackhead or a whitehead will appear because the blocked flow of sebum is near the skin's surface, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If the sebum blockage is deeper in the skin, a pimple, or pastule, occurs. A blockage that is slightly deeper will result in a pustule, or a pimple filled with pus. When the blockage is very deep, severe inflammation will be present, causing a painful cyst, or nodule, which is the most severe form of acne.

Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal imbalance is often associated with oily skin, and oily skin causes acne. A hormonal imbalance causes oily skin due to increased levels of testosterone, an androgen hormone, according to The Acne Resource Center. Estrogen and androgen levels must be in balance in order for skin to be healthy.
