Caffeine and Acne Caffeine and Acne Caffeine and Acne

Acne and caffeine are closely linked in respect of causing acne. Hair follicles and sebaceous glands are more susceptible to caffeine and other caffeine like substances. Caffeine is defined as an alkaloid and stimulant that rapidly generates energy for a short period of time. Caffeine is of highly addictive nature. Several researches reveal that women addictive to caffeine are more prone to develop acne.

How does caffeine induce acne?
Overproduction of sebum results in clogging of hair follicles, bacteria in hair follicles mixes with sebum to make a plaque. The plaque clogs the hair follicles and restricts the continuous flow of sebum, hence, a bump arises. If the sebum pops out the bump, it is called blackhead, if not, it is called whitehead. Pimples, papules, pustules and blemishes are blackheads and whiteheads on the basis of their severity. Caffeine triggers the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. When sebum is continuously being overproduced and restricted with hair follicles, it ruptures the walls of follicles. At this juncture, the bump is called papule or blemish.

Symptoms of Acne when caused by caffeine:
There is no enough difference in acne caused by caffeine and other stimuli. But, acne caused by caffeine may or may not associate with drowsiness, rapid energy production for a small period of time, difficulty in breathing, infection in outer layer of inner cheeks and gums and tongue etc. These symptoms may not necessarily correlate with acne.

Is there any specific amount of caffeine causing acne?
Yes, although caffeine causes toxicity within blood and liver, the amount of caffeine is more important in this regard. Usually, taking coffee and other caffeine containing substances twice a day does not cause any toxicity. Taking beverages, coffee, tea etc more than twice a day may stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.

Avoid Caffeine and Switch to Green Tea:
Avoid caffeine as much as possible as its side effects exceed its benefits and the degree of usefulness. In western culture, use of coffee is very common and they take large sized mugs of coffee at breakfast. Besides coffee, there are other sources such as caffeine containing beverages, foods etc.

Thus, avoid taking coffee and switch to green tea; it is an excellent and effective antioxidant that dispels toxins from your body.

Conclusion:
Caffeine is an alkaloid that triggers the nerves to boost energy rapidly, but the energy is temporary and last quickly. Studies reveal that alkaloid directly stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce large amount of sebum. Sebum when mixes with propionibacteria makes a plaque. Therefore, health professionals recommend avoiding the intake of caffeine as much as possible.
