Caused by a bacterial buildup or the overproduction of sebum--the oil that moisturizes the skin--acne plagues more than just the face, according to the Mayo Clinic. Acne can form on any part of the skin. For thousands of people, it means breakouts of pimples on the chest, back or buttocks. Acne.org reports that body and facial acne form for the same reasons, but are treated differently because skin on the face is thinner than the rest of the body.

PanOxyl

Benzoyl peroxide is a multi-faceted body acne treatment. The Mayo Clinic says it not only kills the bacterial cause of acne--propionibacterium acnes--but the items that clog the pores. PanOxyl is an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide treatment that dissolves excess sebum production and washes away dead skin cells that contribute to acne growth. Though most over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide facial treatments have concentrations of 2.5 percent to 4 percent, PanOxyl is available in soap bars, body washes and topical creams at a 10 percent strength.

Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash and Body Scrub

The cosmetic company Neutrogena manufactures a body wash and scrub under its "Body Clear" label. The wash is a smooth, sweet smelling soap; the scrub has grains that exfoliate the skin when applied. Its active ingredient is salicylic acid.
Salicylic acid is the most widely available acne treatment. Functionally, it slows the bacterial killing of skin cells and prevents the buildup of dead cells on the top layer of skin. According to the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus, it also reduces acne swelling and pimple size by tightening the skin.

Oral Antibiotics: Erythromycin and Tetracycline

Bacteria are a primary cause of acne, so doctors often prescribe an orally-ingested pill to clear out the infection. The primary antibiotics used in the U.S. are erythromycin and tetracycline. Although there are brand names for these medications, both are typically prescribed in their generic form.
Erythromycin is an all-purpose antibacterial agent, according to the American Academy of Dermatologists. Drugs.com lists its availability as a tablet in concentrations of 250mg to 500mg. Tetracycline modifies the RNA of acne bacteria, reducing its effectiveness and eliminating it. Available in strengths of 500mg to 1,000mg, it can be used for a long period to treat body outbreaks, according to the AAD.

Kenalog-10

Cysctic acne is unsightly and painful. Pustules form below the surface and harden like any other cyst. Cystic acne leaks pus underneath the skin, inflaming the surrounding tissue. For the most severe cases of cystic acne, doctors provide a dose of Kenalog-10, an interlesional corticosteroid. The AAD writes that interlesional corticosteroids are dispensed as an injection to prevent the pustule from rupturing and causing greater damage and scarring. According to Drugs.com and the AAD, the active ingredient in Kenalog-10--triamcinolone acetonide--melts the cyst and strengthens and heals the skin tissue in that region. Kenalog-10 is produced by Bristol Myers-Squibb.
