Overview

Blotchy skin on the face, especially the nose area, can be embarrassing and hard to conceal. It can be the sign of a skin condition called rosacea. The National Rosacea Society reports that approximately 16 million people in America suffer from this condition. Because facial blotchiness can be damaging to the self-esteem, it is important to understand why it occurs and how it can be remedied.

Symptoms

According to MedlinePlus, blotchy skin on the nose could be the sign rosacea. With this condition, skin on the nose can appear red in splotches, flushed and erupt in acne like bumps that can contain pus or get crusty. The skin may also burn or sting. In addition, blotchy skin can be accompanied by the appearance of veins in the facial area.

Causes

Unfortunately, rosacea's cause is not currently known and research is ongoing. One possible theory for the cause of rosacea includes problems with the blood vessels of the face, in which they dilate too easy. Certain triggers, such as alcohol and stress, can increase the appearance of redness and blotchiness. In addition, rosacea tends to run in families. Approximately 40 percent of people surveyed by the National Rosacea Society claimed to have a family member with rosacea symptoms.

Treatments

MedlinePlus explains that there is no real cure for rosacea; however, it is possible to avoid conditions and situations that trigger blotchy flare ups on the nose. It can be beneficial for a rosacea sufferer to keep a diary to keep track of what specific triggers cause problems. A doctor can also prescribe oral antibiotics or perform a laser procedure to reduce the appearance of blotchy skin on the nose.

Tips

To avoid blotchy skin on the nose and face, the patient always wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. In addition, he should avoid touching his nose or rubbing at the irritated skin. This can just exacerbate symptoms and make them more apparent. He should also only use facial products that are noncomedogenic, which means they will not as easily clog the pores and contribute to blotchiness.

Dangers

SkinCancerNet, a website of the American Academy of Dermatology, warns that a doctor or dermatologist should be consulted about blotchy skin on the nose to rule out any serious medical conditions. In some circumstances, blotchy skin could be the sign of skin cancer. This type of cancer typically affects the outermost layer of skin, causing damage to the DNA molecules and resulting in skin changes. Because the blotchiness is very visible and is constantly changing, it is usually detected in its early stages.
