Blackhead Removing Remedies

Blackheads occur when oil gets blocked in a pore. Blackheads are not partial to any age group, skin type or place on the body. Improper removal of blackheads can be dangerous because the bacteria in them can spread, promoting more acne and blackheads. There are several safe remedies that can be used to treat blackheads.

Blackhead Strips

According to Daily Glow, blackhead strips can effectively remove blackheads from the pores. They are usually inexpensive and can be purchased at most drug and grocery stores. They work by pulling blackheads out of the pores like tape.

Chemical Peels

Sometimes, for persistent blackheads that do not respond to home treatment, professional treatment from a dermatologist may be required. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that chemical peels are sometimes used to treat blackheads. This process involves a dermatologist applying a light coating of glycolic acid to the affected area. This can help loosen blackheads in the pores and may prevent them from becoming inflamed.

Extraction

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a doctor may also choose to extract blackheads with a special sterile device that is about the size of a pen. This procedure should only be performed by a dermatologist. Self-extraction can make acne worse and may even cause scarring or infection.

Laser Treatment

Laser and light therapies are also sometimes used to remove blackheads. The Mayo Clinic reports that these treatments target the acne-causing bacteria, P.acnes. Laser treatments can be especially effective on hard-to-reach places like the back, where medication is difficult to apply.

Acne Medications

For moderate acne, like blackheads, a doctor may prescribe a short course of oral antibiotics to fight inflammation and bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic. Topical antibiotics may also be used. Some topical treatments are derived from vitamin A and work by promoting new cell growth and preventing clogging of hair follicles. A dermatologist may also prescribe oral contraceptives to regulate hormones.
