Overview

Blackheads refer to a type of acne also known as open comedones. Blackheads occur when oil and dead skin cells becomes clogged in the pores of the skin. When the oil is exposed to oxygen, it turns black in color. As long as there is no sign of infection, such as pain and pus, you can remove the blackheads on your own at home. Clean your skin on a regular basis to prevent future outbreaks of blackheads.

Step 1

Fill a bowl with boiling water. Place your head over the bowl while using a towel to cover your head. Keep your face in front of the steam for five minutes to help open up your pores.

Step 2

Choose a blackhead extraction product. Pore strips can be used to pull the blackheads out of the skin. Peel away the adhesive backing of the pore strips and smooth it over the affected area. Leave in place for several minutes and then peel it off of the skin. Dispose of the strips after use.

A blackhead extractor is a stainless steel tool that can remove blackheads as well. Place the hole at the end of the extractor above the blackhead that you wish to remove. Press down on the extractor and the blackhead should push out of the skin. Use the scoop end of the blackhead extractor to clear away the oil and dead skin cells that made up the blackhead. Clean the blackhead extractor between uses with alcohol soaked wipes.

Step 3

Clean the skin with a blackhead fighting facial wash. After removing the blackheads, wash the area with lukewarm water and a facial wash that contains benzoyl peroxide. This can get rid of any excess oil and dead skin cells that may be on the skin.

Step 4

Continue to use the benzoyl peroxide cleanser until the area is free of blackheads. During treatment, use non-comedogenic beauty products to keep from further blocking the pores.
