Many treatments are available for treating acne, ranging from standard over-the-counter creams to prescription drugs. For women, certain types of birth control pills show relief for some, providing a more regulated hormonal balance and less oil on the skin. Though it's likely you'll need to be on the pill for several months before you see a decrease in breakouts, it's worth trying, especially if you are a good candidate for this medication (you're under 35, don't smoke and don't have a history of heart disease, blood clot or stroke).

Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, or Yaz, is a brand of birth control pill that is indicated for use in treating acne. It counters against androgens--male hormones in the body--which means it can help prevent excess oil production and subsequent breakouts. Yaz is also indicated for preventing pregnancy and pain and mood issues caused by PMS.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo

Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is the brand name for Ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate, which is used to protect you against unplanned pregnancies. However, it can also be used to treat and prevent acne outbreaks that range from moderate to moderately severe, placing a damper on hormone fluctuations that can lead to an overproduction of oil.

Norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol, or Estrostep as its known by its brand name, is another type of birth control pill that you can use to treat acne. It is indicated for use in women over the age of 15 who want to use an oral contraceptive, who do not smoke or have a history of stroke or blood clots and have found standard topical treatments to be ineffective.
