Blemishes occur to most people at some time in their lives, and can be treated with many different skin care products. Some acne treatment products can be more effective than others, which can determine how quickly acne can be eliminated. To clear the skin effectively, it is helpful to know what the best blemish acne treatments are.

Salicylic Acid Gel

Salicylic acid gel fights acne breakouts by regulating the rate at which skin cells are turned over. This means that the skin cells are sloughed off and developed at a steady pace, which will help prevent them from clogging the pores and causing acne. To apply salicylic acid gel, a pea-sized amount of the gel should be spread onto the skin until it has been absorbed. Salicylic acid gel can be used up to two times per day. If irritation or swelling occurs, discontinue its use and consult a dermatologist.

Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Benzoyl peroxide cream helps to fight off acne blemishes by releasing oxygen into the pores, which kill off the bacteria that causes acne. Benzoyl peroxide cream comes in multiple strengths, including 10 percent, 5 percent and 2.5 percent concentrations. Although it may seem logical to use the stronger concentrations of benzoyl peroxide to fight acne, the stronger creams can actually cause side effects, such as redness, peeling and itching. Using a pea-sized amount of the 2.5 percent concentration benzoyl peroxide cream will effectively clear the skin without causing irritation. Benzoyl peroxide cream can be applied to the skin twice per day to clear acne.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an antibacterial oil that works to eliminate acne by killing off acne-causing bacteria on the skin. Tea tree oil is extracted from the Australian Tea Tree plant, and is bottled in its pure form. Before tea tree oil is used on the skin, it should be diluted into a 5 percent solution. This can be accomplished by combining 8 oz. of water with 5 drops of pure tea tree oil. According to the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil can be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream, but without causing irritation. The diluted tea tree oil can be applied to the skin up to three times per day to eliminate acne without irritating the skin.
