Acne affects most people at some point in their lives, but most commonly occurs during periods when then body is experiencing hormonal fluctuation, such as during puberty or throughout the teenage years. There are several acne products that work well enough to clear teenage acne, eliminating blemishes without causing the skin to become irritated.

Gentle Soap for Sensitive Skin

Most commercial soaps and cleansers on the market contain harsh chemical ingredients that can be irritating to younger skin. For teenage skin affected by acne, the skin is already irritated and inflamed, so applying a harsh soap to the skin can exacerbate the skin condition. Luckily, teenage skin can be effectively cleansed by using a gentle soap that is formulated for sensitive skin types. A cleanser or soap designed for sensitive skin will be free of artificial perfumes and dyes, and harsh additives such as sodium lauryl sulfate or mineral oil. When applying a soap, use a very gentle touch, and avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin. The skin should be cleansed twice per day, once in the morning and again at night.

Salicylic Acid Gel

Most skin can be cleared by applying salicylic acid gel, which eliminates acne by balancing out skin cell turnover. This means that the new skin cells are encouraged to develop more quickly, while the old skin cells are sloughed away at a faster rate, keeping the pores clear and acne-free. A pea-sized amount of salicylic acid gel should be applied twice per day after cleansing the skin. If itching, redness, or peeling occurs, stop using the salicylic acid gel and talk to your dermatologist.

Oil-Free Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

Keeping the skin properly hydrated is an important step in keeping the skin clear, but many facial lotions and creams contain acne-causing (comedogenic) oils or harsh chemical ingredients that can be too irritating to teenage skin. It is helpful to replace these lotions with one that is oil-free and designed for sensitive skin types so that the skin can be moisturized without becoming clogged or irritated. Apply a dime-sized amount of oil-free sensitive skin lotion to the face twice per day after the salicylic acid gel has been absorbed.
