Acne can occur on any type of skin, including dry, combination and oily skin types. When acne appears on oily skin, it is typically due to an overproduction of sebum, which becomes clogged inside the pores. Fortunately, there are a few skin care treatments that are helpful in eliminating acne on oily skin.

Castor Oil Cleanser

Most people with oily skin try to use a standard soap or cleanser on their skin, but traditional cleansers can be too drying. If the skin becomes overly dry, it can cause the oil glands to produce more sebum in order to compensate for the lack of hydration in the skin. To prevent this, cleanse the skin with a non-comedogenic oil, such as castor oil. Massage the castor oil into the skin for three to five minutes. Then, apply steam or hot water to open the pores and allow the oil and impurities to drain out. You can accomplish this by placing a steaming washcloth over the face, or leaning over a bowl of steaming water for five minutes. Cleanse the skin with castor oil up to two times per day.

Tea Tree Oil Toner

Benzoyl peroxide cream is the most commonly used acne treatment for eliminating acne, but can cause the skin to become overly dry, stimulating the skin to overproduce oils to compensate. The Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital suggests using tea tree oil on the skin as an effective alternative to benzoyl peroxide cream. It can clear the skin without causing the same drying side effects. To use tea tree oil on the skin, first dilute it into a 5 percent solution. To accomplish this, combine 8 oz. of water with five drops of tea tree oil, then apply it to the skin with a cotton ball up to three times per day.

Jojoba Oil Moisturizer

It may seem illogical to apply oil to oily skin in order to balance out oil production, but using a lightweight, non-comedogenic oil can do just that. Jojoba oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs into the skin quickly, and can help keep the skin properly hydrated to slow down oil production. To apply jojoba oil, place a few drops of the oil into your hands, and rub them together to distribute the oil evenly between them. Pat the oil over the entire face, covering it with a thin layer. Repeat twice per day.
