According to the American Academy of Dermatology, several factors contribute to the occurrence of acne, including inflammation of the skin, clogged pores, excess oil and bacteria. The AAD recommends daily, gentle skin cleansing for a healthy complexion. To effectively clear acne, treatments must be immediate, regular and ongoing. The best acne skin care lines have a variety of cleansers, moisturizers and acne-specific treatment options.

Neutrogena

Founded in 1930, the Neutrogena company originally marketed its soaps to dermatologists and luxury hotels. Today Neutrogena has a full line of affordable acne products. Neutrogena's Oil Free Acne Wash is an affordable, gentle cleanser suitable for everyday use. The wash is effective at treating acne because of its active ingredient 2 percent salicylic acid, which is recommended by the Mayo Clinic to treat acne. Neutrogena also manufactures Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub, and Neutrogena Rapid Clear Sore Pimple Gel, as well as a number of other acne-specific products.

Clearasil

Clearasil was developed by a chemist in the 1950s and soon became one of the biggest names in acne products. Combining gentle cleansing ingredients like glycerin and aloe with more powerful, acne-fighting ingredients like 10-percent benzoyl peroxide, Clearasil's line of acne treatment products helps minimize breakouts and prevent the scarring and embarrassment that can occur because of pimples and blackheads. Clearasil's product line includes facial cleansers, scrubs, treatment creams, cleansing pads and acne treatment kits. Clearasil is sold at retail drugstores, grocery stores and online.

Paula's Choice

Paula Begoun, author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," created her own line of beauty products called Paula's Choice. Paula's Choice acne products include formulas for normal-to-oily skin, normal-to-dry skin and moderate-to-severe acne. Begoun recommends cleansing acne-prone skin daily with a gentle, water-soluble cleanser. She also suggests exfoliating with a product containing beta hydroxy acids and recommends disinfecting the skin with a product containing benzoyl peroxide. This daily cleansing regime should be augmented with an oil-absorbing mask about once a week. Paula's Choice products are priced slightly higher than drugstore products but less than cosmetic counter prices. The products are only sold online.
