A little effort can go a long way toward preserving the appearance of your skin and protecting it from signs of premature aging. Although mature skin might need a little extra care than younger skin, good basic skin care generally remains constant. Caring for your skin requires a daily commitment to cleansing, moisturizing and minimizing sun exposure.

Sun Protection

Shielding your skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays is central to basic skin care. Repeated and lengthy sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and roughness. You may also increase your risk of developing skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, approximately 30 minutes before you head outdoors. Wearing protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats will also help protect your skin.

Cleansing

The Cleveland Clinic recommends that you gently wash with your face with warm water and a mild cleanser each morning and again before you go to bed. Strong soaps tend to be abrasive, and the Mayo Clinic says long, hot showers or baths can remove oil from your skin, causing it to dry. Pat your skin dry to allow some moisture to remain.

Toners

Using a toner on your skin will help ensure that any remnants of dirt, oil and cosmetics have been cleaned away. According to London Cosmetics, a toner is an all-purpose cleaner that can be mild or astringent and contain varying ingredients. For example, rosewater is used sometimes used in toning products because it helps hydrate, clean and nourish skin. Tea tree oil is known for helping clear blemishes, says London Cosmetics.

Exfoliate

The Mayo Clinic recommends that you exfoliate your skin with products that contain alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids or poly hydroxy acids. These acids are man-made forms of acids derived from sugar-containing fruits. They will help slough off old, dead skin and encourage the production of new, healthy-looking skin, says the Mayo Clinic.

Moisturize

Be vigilant about keeping your skin moisturized. The Mayo Clinic says when skin cells become dry, they can lose their plumpness and shrivel. This may lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Moisturizers may help temporarily plump your skin and diminish the appearance of wrinkles. The Cleveland Clinic says even if you have oily skin, you should moisturize your skin with an oil-free lotion or cream.

Wrinkle Creams

Moisturizers that contain coenzyme Q10 or retinol might modestly diminish wrinkles, according to the Mayo Clinic. Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient that helps manage energy production in cells. Retinol is a vitamin A compound that is commonly used in over-the-counter wrinkle creams. Retinol is a weaker version of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription wrinkle cream tretinoin (Retin-A). Since the FDA does not study cosmetic products for effectiveness, there's no guarantee that any over-the-counter product will reduce wrinkles, says the Mayo Clinic.
