Overview

Whether you are a man or a woman, your skin texture changes as you age. Older skin begins to lose its elasticity and suppleness, which makes fine lines, dryness and large pores bigger issues than they are in younger skin. These changes require you to modify your skin care products and routines.

Cleansing

Clean skin is especially important for skin that is prone to acne. This is generally less likely in aging skin, although it can occur in menopausal women. Acne is most likely to occur on your face, where the concentration of oil glands is highest. You should cleanse your skin each day with a gentle, non-drying soap, made especially for your face.

Exfoliating

Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. It can expose the younger skin cells beneath, resulting in smoother skin with a more youthful appearance. Exfoliated skin is also better able to accept a powder or liquid foundation. A mild exfoliant made for sensitive skin is frequently sufficient to accomplish this and will minimize the irritation to your skin.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing should always be a part of your skin care regimen, but it becomes more important as you age. You should moisturize your skin in the morning and at night if you are more than 50 years old. The two applications of moisturizer will help minimize the appearance of fine lines on your face. You should also use makeup that contains moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated.

Prevention/Solution

Sunscreen is especially important to your skin if you are older than 50. The ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause permanent damage to the skin. The cumulative effects of the sun on older skin can cause the skin to age prematurely. Look for sunscreen products with a high SPF rating to protect your skin when you go outside.

Considerations

Many skin care products are specifically designed for aging skin. Eye creams that contain arbutin or caffeine can reduce the puffiness under your eyes that can occur in people over 50. A sunless tanning lotion can minimize the appearance of varicose veins.
