Acne is caused by dirt or bacteria that clogs pores, causing red inflammation underneath the skin. The result is unsightly and often embarrassing bumps that can be difficult to remove and prevent. Although everyone's skin is different, baking soda may help to clear acne and prevent new blemishes from forming. Baking soda has cleansing and exfoliating properties and is also a natural option. Since baking soda has no harsh chemicals and is inexpensive, it is a convenient skin treatment.

Cleanser

Baking soda can be used as a facial cleanser by combining 2 tbsp. with enough lemon juice to make a paste. The baking soda scrubs away dirt, while the lemon juice acts as a purifying agent and tightens pores. Tomato juice can be used in place of lemon juice because it is also an astringent. Scrub the face and neck area and follow with a moisturizer. This cleanser can be used in the morning and evening. Use a special moisturizer for problem skin if your acne prone skin is also oily.

Mask

A baking soda mask can remove dirt and bacteria from pores. Combine baking soda with enough water to make a paste and apply the mask after cleansing, while your skin is still wet. According to My Beauty Recipes, let the mask dry for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water. Another facial acne mask can be made by combining 2 tsp. of oatmeal, 1 tsp. of baking soda and enough water to make a paste. This mask can also be left on for 10 minutes, and adds the nourishing and cleansing benefits of oatmeal to the mixture.

Exfoliator

Planet Green states that baking soda makes an effective skin exfoliator because it is coarse enough to remove dead skin cells, but still gentle enough to avoid irritating the skin. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to a regular cleanser and gently massage it onto the skin 2 to 3 times a week to remove dead skin cells and dirt, and to keep the skin looking smooth and tight. Use less baking soda if your skin is red afterward, and be sure to moisturize after exfoliating.
