Ayurvedic medicine is a holistic approach to healing. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine explains that this ancient system of healing began in India and sees illness as an imbalance of both physical and emotional traits. Bringing your body, mind and spiritual being together in alignment to treat illness is the goal of Ayurvedic remedies. Treating acne through Ayurveda means adjusting your diet, using natural topical remedies and balancing your mental state. Consult a health-care provider before starting any new treatment.

According to the Ayurvedic belief system, each person falls into a grouping, called a dosha, based on his physical and emotional characteristics. The word dosha translates to life force. suggests that acne can be caused by an imbalance or aggravation of the pitta dosha, which controls both hormonal activity and your digestive system. Eating bland foods that do not upset your digestive system can restore your dosha to its normal balance and may resolve your acne. Foods to include in your diet include oatmeal--also an example of a low glycemic index food, which can sometimes resolve hormonal acne--rice, applesauce, non-citrus fruits like bananas, apples, apricots and figs, and beans. Following the example of Ayurveda, avoid fried foods and citrus fruits that can further irritate your pitta dosha. Check with your doctor before beginning any new eating plan.

Facial Cleansers

Natural facial cleansers are Ayurvedic medicine's alternative to conventional topical acne remedies. Facial masks made from chickpeas or a combination of goat's milk and almond powder are suggestions made by to heal active acne lesions. Topical creams made from sandalwood and turmeric may also be beneficial because turmeric contains natural anti-inflammatory properties. Note that turmeric's orange hue can temporarily turn your face yellow. Herbal remedies, even those used topically, are not for everyone, so a consultation with your dermatologist may be in order.

Creating Balance

Creating a balance in your emotional life as well as your physical body is one of the tenets of Ayurveda, and clearing acne in this way is no exception. Because acne is primarily an affliction suffered by people of the pitta dosha, the belief is that creating a calming environment can help your body heal. Overheating, both in the physical and emotional sense, can contribute to imbalance that could lead to acne. Taking some time to cool off, place yourself in relationships that are kind, generous and good for you, and staying away from conflict are holistic tools that might make you less susceptible to acne and related problems.
