Ayurvedic Acne Remedies Ayurvedic Acne Remedies

Ayurveda, a holistic medical system first developed in India, focuses on balancing the mind, body and spirit as a way of achieving optimal health, explains the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In Ayurveda, treating physical ailments--including skin conditions such as acne--involves adjusting diet and lifestyle habits to help patients improve their immune function and restore harmony in life. Although little research exists to verify the effectiveness of Ayurvedic acne treatments, such remedies may potentially offer relief from acne symptoms, helping you regain a clear complexion.

Diet

Ayurveda considers diet a primary cause of acne development, according to the Ayushveda website, and recommends modifying your eating habits as a way to heal your skin. Ayurveda's dietary acne treatment involves limiting cold foods and beverages in favor of warm-temperature fare, waiting at least three to four hours after each meal before eating again, consuming high-fiber leafy green vegetables, eating ample amounts of fresh fruit, avoiding excessive consumption of sugary and spicy meals and minimizing your intake of greasy foods--especially during the summer or while living in a hot climate.

Facial Cleansing

For acne sufferers, Ayurveda prescribes specific face-cleaning regimens to help you combat blemishes. According to the integrative health website HolisticOnline.com, an Ayurvedic cleansing routine begins by washing your face with a paste made from 1 tsp. of chickpea flour and enough water to create a thick, moist consistency. After rinsing off the mixture and drying your face with a towel, apply a second paste made with 1 tsp. of almond powder and 1 cup of goat's milk, covering all acne-prone areas of your face; allow this paste to dry for several minutes, then rinse it off gently. As a final step, apply a facial cream containing turmeric and sandalwood to your skin. To avoid unwanted side effects, consult with a physician before using this cleansing regimen, particularly if you take other skin-drying acne medications or have allergies to any of the ingredients.

Fast Remedies

Ayurveda offers several remedies for quickly improving the appearance of pimple-ridden skin. According to Ayushveda, coating your face with a mixture of rose water and dried, finely ground orange peel can minimize the appearance of blemishes and confer a healthier texture to your complexion. Similarly, dousing your skin with a mixture of water and neem root may offer fast relief from acne, Ayushveda states. Although Ayurvedic medicine regards these mixtures as acne remedies, no clinical studies have verified their effectiveness.

Lifestyle Changes

According to the Ayurvedic health website Baidyanath Ayurved, battling acne involves more than external treatments and dietary adjustments: lifestyle changes may also be effective acne remedies. Because Ayurveda views acne as a potential symptom of internal stress, finding ways to relieve grief, worries and fear may have positive effects on your skin, Baidyanath Ayurved explains; meditation, yoga and other relaxation techniques can offer relief from tension. In addition, drinking fresh water, breathing clean air, exercising regularly and receiving sunlight exposure may also help treat acne by improving your overall health.
