One of the first things a dermatologist would tell you in the treatment of acne is to incorporate a daily skin regimen into your routine. At-home treatments can mimic that sort of skin regimen with natural products and still offer great results.

Use a Mild Soap

The first step in a daily skin regimen is using a mild soap once in the morning and once before retiring to bed, and no more. Over washing the skin can have adverse effects. Dr. Andrew Weil recommends using glycerin soap. Avoid using any scrubbers or even washcloths, as these, too, can cause irritation to the skin. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel after rinsing.

Treat the Acne

The second step in a daily skin regimen is using a topical acne treatment. The Mayo Clinic reports that 5 percent tea tree oil is just as effective as 5 percent benzoyl peroxide in treating acne. Apply tea tree oil to the acne-prone skin after each washing.

Moisturize Your Skin

Acne treatments can dry your skin, and dry skin can cause extra skin cells to slough off into pores, clogging them. Aloe is a very effective moisturizer, and it contains healing properties used as a natural treatment for acne. Gently apply aloe vera to the acne-prone skin when it is dry.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Acne not only can be treated from the outside in, but it should also be treated from the inside out to bring your skin to optimum health. Dr. Weil recommends increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables for the antioxidants they contain, which are vital to boosting the immune system and enable the skin to renew and repair tissues. He also recommends eating fresh fish such as wild salmon twice per week to increase omega-3 fatty acids for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is essential to the skin's overall health. Without water, skin cells deflate, causing the skin to lose its elasticity, suppleness and strength to fight against damage. Not only does water keep your skin plump and prevent it from becoming dry, it also washes toxins away from your skin that could build up and cause acne.


Add a zinc supplement to your diet for its ability to boost your immune system and provide anti-inflammatory properties. The Mayo Clinic recommends it as a natural treatment of acne. A deficiency in zinc is known to cause acne.
