You wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and there it is--a new pimple or a breakout of acne. There are few things more discouraging to someone trying to keep his face clean and clear than recurring acne. Consulting a dermatologist and using special creams and lotions can be expensive, but there are some things you can do at home to fight acne and pimples.

Regular Face Washing

Acne is caused by pores clogged with oil, dirt and fatty substances. Washing your face regularly will help prevent clogging and dirt from building up. Wash in the morning, as your face has been building up oil while you've been sleeping, and at night before bed, to wash off the dirt and grime that has accumulated during the day. Since washing will dry out your face, use a water-based lotion on your skin afterward to prevent cracking and peeling.

Acne Diet

Since acne and pimples are cause by oil and fatty substances in your skin, many people have success avoiding it by steering clear of oily and fatty foods in their diet. Limiting the amount of oily and fatty foods may keep your body from depositing some of that gunk on your skin. Foods with ingredients like excess sugar, refined carbs and excess oil and grease have been shown to cause oily buildup on the skin, so avoid too many sweets, white bread and pasta and especially fried food if you're trying to get rid of that stubborn acne. Also try to eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and drink at least 64 oz. of water per day, which will help keep your body (and your pores) hydrated and help your body flush out fat and other harmful substances.

All-Natural Face Mask

Many people have found success applying all sorts of substances to the face to help clear pores and fight the inflammation that comes with acne. An oatmeal mask, usually using hot water and sometimes even a touch of honey, is one of the simplest masks you can create, from ingredients most people already have in their homes. Adding cucumber can help moisturize your skin, while the acids in ingredients such as citrus peels and juices can help exfoliate the skin.
