About 85 percent of American teenagers deal with acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Though the exact cause of acne is unknown, research has identified certain conditions that can trigger or worsen acne, including heredity, stress, hormones and menstruation. While severe cases of acne are best treated by your health care provider, mild cases of acne may respond well to homemade facial masks. Use a mask once or twice weekly, and keep in mind that any acne treatment can take four to eight weeks before you see results.

Oatmeal

A common ingredient in skin care products and homemade skin remedies alike, oatmeal is known for its exfoliating and cleansing properties. By leaving it on your skin for some time, it can also absorb excess oil. The honey in this facial mask acts as a skin toner.

Boil ¾ cup of water, add ½ cup of quick oatmeal, stir and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for one minute. Remove from heat, and then stir in ¼ cup of honey, mixing well. Allow the mixture to cool, which will also cause it to thicken slightly. Apply the cooled oatmeal mixture to your face. Leave the oatmeal mask on for 10 to 20 minutes. Wash it off with warm water.

Baking Soda

Mix about 2 tbsp. of baking soda with enough water to make a paste. After washing your face with a gentle cleanser, apply the baking soda mask. Leave it on for about 20 minutes so it can absorb any impurities or excess oil on your skin. Rinse off the mask, dry your face with a clean towel, and notice how smooth and refreshed your skin appears.

Peppermint

Peppermint offers a natural way to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with acne. Place a handful of fresh peppermint leaves in a mortar and pound them with the pestle until they become a pulp. Apply the crushed leaf pulp to your face, and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Then rinse your face with cool water. You will notice the menthol in this mask leaves your face feeling cool and refreshed.

Egg White

Egg whites, with their natural astringent properties, leave skin feeling softer and tighter. Egg white may also help clear away red spots. Separate an egg, and whip the white until it is thick and foamy. Apply the whipped egg white to your face. Leave the mask on for 20 to 30 minutes or longer, and then wash your face with warm water.
