Acne can happen to anyone, but is most common in teenagers, and pregnant, menstruating and menopausal women. This is because hormones in the body can cause the skin to produce extra oil, or sebum. When sebum collects on the skin, it can trap bacteria and dead skin cells in the hair follicles, which causes an irritation. This irritation can become red and swollen, causing acne. If acne is mild or moderate, you can treat it at home using over-the-counter and home remedies. If acne is more severe, it may require treatment by a dermatologist.
Wash your face twice a day with a medicated acne wash, states the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic suggests using an acne wash that contains an effective active ingredient, like benzoyl peroxide, lactic acid, resorcinol or salicylic acid. After rinsing your skin, dry your face thoroughly with a clean towel. You can also use a medicated acne wash on other areas of the body that have acne, like the chest or back.
