"Fast" is a relative term, and unfortunately there's no cure for acne that's fast enough. The American Academy of Dermatology notes there is no overnight treatment or immediate cure for acne, and that acne treatment takes time. It notes t can take four to eight weeks to treat completely, dependent upon severity. There are treatments and steps you can take to speed-up the acne healing process and prevent further outbreaks, however.

Wash, Treat, Moisturize

It's important to have a disciplined daily skin regimen to help to treat current acne and to prevent more breakouts. The first step is to wash the face with a mild cleanser, using only your fingers to apply and pat the skin dry with a clean towel. After the skin is dry, apply either an over-the-counter or prescription topical acne treatment. If over-the-counter, Acne.org recommends finding a product containing 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide to kill the bacteria causing the acne infection. Finally, apply an oil-free moisturizer with sunscreen.

Oral Antibiotics

Dermatologists will often prescribe oral antibiotics to go along with a prescription topical treatment. The oral antibiotics work from the inside-out to kill the bacteria causing the infection within the acne. A variety of antibiotics can be prescribed to treat acne, including Bactrim, minocycline, doxycycline and tetracycline.

Isotretoin

Isotretoin, marketed under the name Accutane, is the only FDA approved medication to treat severe acne nodules and cysts. It is prescribed by dermatologists to treat severe acne cases when other medications fail to work. It comes with many severe side effects, however, and patients must be carefully monitored by their doctors for signs of physical and psychological changes. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant cannot take this prescription even for a short time due to the severe birth defects it can cause.

Zeno Hot Spot

Zeno is a handheld device available online or in your local drugstore that treats individual acne blemishes via heat. The device is placed directly onto the individual blemish and uses gentle heat technology to kill the bacteria causing the acne infection. The manufacturer claims it will reduce or diminish 90 percent of individual acne blemishes within 24 hours, and the product is FDA approved. It will not prevent future breakouts, but it will help to reduce the existing acne pimple quickly.
