Antibiotics can help adults suffering from moderate to severe acne by attacking the bacteria that contribute to its development. Your doctor may prescribe topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics, or a combination of both. If you are using antibiotics to treat acne, follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Your doctor will monitor you closely for any potential side effects and to gauge whether the prescribed treatment is effective. It can take from six weeks to three months to see results from oral antibiotics.

Topical Antibiotics

Topical antibiotics are often prescribed to treat acne with inflammation, according to the School of Dermatology at the University of Michigan Medical School. Commonly prescribed topical antibiotics include clindamycin, a clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide combination, an erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide combination, and sodium sulfacetamide.

Oral Tetracyclines

Tetracycline is one of the oldest antibiotics used to treat adult acne. It is inexpensive and usually tolerated well, according to the Acne Guide website. Newer forms of tetracycline prescribed for treating adult acne include doxycycline and minocycline. These newer forms may cause fewer side effects. If you are using an oral tetracycline, talk with your doctor about proper sun protection: tetracyclines are known to cause sun sensitivity.

Other Oral Antibiotics

Oral macrolide antibiotics often prescribed to treat adult acne include erythromycin and azithromycin. Other antibioitics sometimes prescribed include trimethoprim, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and Keflex.
