Alternative Treatments for Fibroids Alternative Treatments for Fibroids

Fibroids, also called fibromyomas, leiomyomas or myomas, occur in the uterus. These noncancerous growths commonly appear in women during the childbearing years. According to MayoClinic.com, three out of four women develop uterine fibroids during their lifetime. Fibroids rarely require treatment, as they are generally benign and not dangerous, but they may cause discomfort, pregnancy complications, pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Alternative treatments exist for those interested in avoiding surgery or medical therapy.

Consult your health care provider before embarking on any alternative regimen.

Acupuncture

The UCLA Health System Fibroid Treatment Program indicates that acupuncture may be effective in treating fibroid symptoms. According to Acufinder.com, acupuncture for fibroid treatment uses points on the body recommended for blood stasis and the uterus. When stimulated, these points may induce regression of cell proliferation and prevent these cells from regenerating. This therapy affects tumor growth, shrinking fibroids, as an alternative to traditional surgery.

Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements, a holistic treatment, act as an alternative therapy for fibroids, according to the UCLA Health System Fibroid Treatment Program. Chinese herbal medicines may treat symptoms and shrink fibroid tumors, claims Acufinder.com. These herbs work to invigorate the blood and eliminate blood stasis, which cures fibroids in 13 percent of treated patients and markedly reduces the occurrence of fibroids in 29 percent of patients. Herbs also successfully reduce the volume of menstrual blood.

Nutrition

Nutritional modifications may play a part in reducing symptoms from fibroids, explains the UCLA Health System Fibroid Treatment Program. Decreasing the intake of caffeine, alcohol, junk foods and foods containing hormones, combined with eating more whole fiber and organic foods, may give beneficial results. A report published in the December 2009 issue of the "American Journal of Epidemiology" reveals that black women with an increased dairy products intake have a reduced incidence of uterine fibroids. While the exact cause of the decrease remains undetermined, researchers are finding that calcium and phosphorus contained in the dairy products impact fibroid occurrence.
