Alternative Treatment for Bipolar Conditions
Medicines traditionally given for bipolar disorder can have side effects that are difficult to deal with, leaving patients looking for less harmful treatments. Alternative medicine treatment can be a safe supplement to drugs, but it's critical to discuss alternative treatments with your doctor before embarking on a treatment plan.
Supplements are not approved by the FDA and can potentially interact with medicine.
If you're seeking alternative treatments because of problems with traditional medication, remember that people react differently to medication. Partner with your doctor to adjust dosages or try different treatments.
In a 2009 study conducted by Zhang and colleagues at the University of Hong Kong and published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, an herbal compound called Free and Easy Wanderer Plus was shown to improve depression in people with bipolar disorder when used in combination with carbemazepine. Other compounds, such as SAMe and omega-3 fatty acids, may help with depression but may also lead to mania, according to studies done at Massachusetts General Hospital and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America.
Talk It Out
According to an article published in the Autumn 2008 issue of Sante Mentale au Quebec, psychotherapy alone may be sufficient treatment for bipolar II. If you have ever been psychotic, however, keep taking your medication.
Talking with other people with mental illness, such as in National Alliance of Mental Illness's support groups or Peer to Peer Recovery Education Program, can help you get information about bipolar disorder and learn coping skills and ways to prevent relapse.
