Overview

Acne is a condition that usually affects adolescents, but adults can have it as well. It is caused by hormonal changes or an overabundance of sebum, a waxy substance that formulates under the skin. This substance blocks hair follicles, and the result is whiteheads, blackheads and pimples that can form anywhere on the body, but they mostly appear on the face, chest, back, neck and shoulders. There are various ways to treat acne with conventional medications, but they often come with uncomfortable side effects. Acne can also be treated by taking alternative measures.

Step 1

Get some beta carotene. Beta carotene-rich foods can help heal the skin, and beta carotene is an antioxidant that can kill the bacteria that causes acne. Some foods that contain beta carotene are sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, cantaloupe, kale and baby spinach.

Step 2

Use some herbal formulas. There are several natural oils and extracts that can help reduce infections and clear blemishes. Some of these are olive leaf extract, tea tree oil, green tea extract and licorice root extract.

Step 3

Take some homeopathic formulas. There are several remedies that can relieve itching and reduce pus in the pimples; they also help if you rough, hard skin and sweat a lot. Some of these include kali bromatum, sulfur and antimonium tartaricum.

Step 4

Try some supplements. Several help to heal inflamed skin, reduce sebum and promote the production of keratin, which gives skin its elasticity. Some of these are chromium, zinc, vitamin B-6 and vitamin E.

Step 5

Be mindful of personal care. Keep areas with acne clean. Also, be careful when you are shaving. Always use fresh blades and do not nick existing pimples. Do not irritate existing pimples by popping, squeezing or scratching them. This can cause them to become infected, and it promotes scars.
