Alternative Candida Treatment
Candida is a fungus that lives everywhere, and is found naturally in our bodies, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The scientific name for yeast is Candida and our immune systems normally keep it under control, but Candida infections can occur, especially if you are taking antibiotics. Yeast infections can occur in different parts of the body such as in the vagina, mouth, esophagus, skin and even in the blood-stream, which can be life-threatening. Antifungal medications normally eliminate yeast infections, but an alternative Candida treatment may also help get rid of yeast infections as well.
Vaginal Yeast Infections
A solution of 1 to 2 tbs. of white vinegar mixed with 1 pint of water, used as a douche once a day for 10 to 14 days is one alternative treatment for vaginal yeast infections, as stated by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Inserting one 600 mg boric acid capsule into the vagina daily for 10 to 14 days can help eliminate a yeast infection, although it may cause irritation. A herbal mixture of 1 tbs. each of oregano leaf, golden seal and coneflower or echinacea steeped 1 pint of boiling water, then cooled as used as a douche once a day for 10 to 14 days in another alternative remedy that can be used.
Candida of the Mouth
Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth and occurs in babies and in people with compromised immune systems such people with HIV. Tea tree oil is a good alternative treatment to oral thrush when used as a mouthwash due to its antifungal properties, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, tea tree oil must be used with caution as it is toxic if swallowed and should only be used as a mouthwash under a health care provider's care. Pomegranate gel is helpful in treating oral thrush caused by mouth sores and is as effective as the medication, miconazole gel.
Candida of the Skin
The University of Maryland Medical Center states that homeopathic remedies are useful in the treatment of yeast infections occurring on the skin. Belladonna is one such homeopathic treatment that is used for inflamed, red skin caused by Candida. Chamomilla homeopathic treatment is commonly used for diaper rash in babies. Arsenicum album can be used for yeast infections that cause itchy, burning rashes. Graphites are also used as a homeopathic remedy is helpful for cracked skin around the mouth and heals caused by Candida.
Taking a probiotic, containing at least 1 billion to 10 billion live organisms, each day can help prevent yeast infections by balancing and restoring bacteria in the body. According to UCSD MyHealth, probiotic bacteria inhibits the growth of bad bacteria, boosting immune function, and increasing resistance to infection. Eating yogurt that contains live acidophilus probiotics is an excellent way to keep yeast infections at bay.
Vitamins and Herbs
Taking vitamins and herbs can help keep your body balanced and able to fight off yeast infections. Vitamin C helps reduce inflammation and keeps your immune system strong and people who are deficient in B-complex vitamins and calcium are often more susceptible to yeast infections, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Propolis has antifungal properties can help eliminate thrush. Caprylic acid also has antifungal properties and if 1 g is taken with meals per day, it can help your body ward off yeast infections.
