Alternate treatment for all types of prostatitis begins with diet. It is the "medicine" part of the treatment. "Bodywork" is a collective term to describe modalities applied to the outside of the body to relieve pain and suffering and bring balance to the body. These procedures should only be done by a licensed, practitioner. Chiropractics is an example. Natural healing always includes treatment of the mental well being of a person. Therefore, stress relief techniques are part of the alternative treatment program.

What to eat

According to Dr. Balch, physician and surgeon of thirty years, and Dr. Stengler, licensed naturopathic doctor, author and lecturer, the recommended diet for treating prostatitis includes a combination of certain foods, vitamins, minerals, herbs and homeopathic remedies. On a daily basis, eat whole grains: brown rice, whole wheat or whole spelt products, or any grain or bread that is not bleached. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits. For swelling, eat a lot of pumpkin and flax seeds, and cooked cold water fish. Drink 10 oz. of water with the flax seeds or sprinkle them lightly on top of a salad. Foods to be avoided are just as important: saturated, partially and hydrogenated fats, sugar, processed and chemicalized foods, fried foods, alcohol and caffeine. This means check labels to avoid these items completely. Processed foods are those that come prepackaged in bags, boxes or cans, on shelves, coolers or freezers, and are already cooked.

Purify and detoxify

While adhering to this diet, Balch and Stengler state that detoxification is also necessary for those with bacterial infections. First on the list is plenty of water. One glass every two hours is essential. A one to three day vegetable juice/broth fast is next. That means no solid food or any other beverage, except water, is allowed during those days. Do three days, or one day on three separate occasions. Also, take 500 mg of Echinacea, four times a day. Doctors Nickel and Rubman, two naturopathic doctors and professors of clinical research in urology, recommend antibiotics for four weeks, or 500 mg of Quercitin, twice a day, 320 mg of Saw Palmetto and fish oil supplements with 1,500 mg of DHA daily, which will decrease inflammation. Daily dosages of 100 mg of Zinc for two months will nourish the prostate gland, then reduce it to 50 mg and include 3 mg of Copper. All of these can be found in health food stores or herb shops.


Various bodywork techniques help relieve pain and swelling associated with prostatitis. Dr. Nickel prescribes acupuncture, a technique that uses special needles to insert into designated points on the body. Doctors Balch and Stengler recommend acupressure, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy to relieve inflammation. Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, except the fingers are used to tap or press on the designated points on the body. Hydrotherapy, which also stimulates circulation, uses water to stimulate healing. The water can be liquid, ice or vapor. Aromatherapy is the process of using essential oils and/or pure plant extracts for treatment by inhalation or absorption through the skin. Burning the oils or plant extracts in a closed area will allow the person to inhale it; adding it to the bath water or a steam bath makes it possible to absorb it through the skin. For prostatitis, aromatherapy is generally used to relieve stress. Massage, another well known bodywork technique, is outside pressure applied to the skin and muscles of the body in a particular pattern and amount of force to a certain area. The purpose of it, as far as prostatitis is concerned, is to relieve pain and/or stimulate circulation. Reflexology is also used for pain, specifically in the lower back, bladder and groin areas. This is done by applying minimal, yet firm pressure to designated points on the feet and hands.

Natural mental health

The state of mind has a direct impact on the healing process. A person living with pain and other ailments are under a lot of stress. This is why Balch and Stengler insist that the person exercise. It is a natural form of stress and pain relief. Yoga and Pilates are gentle forms of exercise. Licensed instructors conduct classes and can recommend movements to practice at home. Walking on a daily basis is very helpful. Bicycle riding should be avoided. As stated earlier, aromatherapy is an excellent stress relief technique. Bergamont and chamomile can be added to the bath water for a relaxing experience.
They also mention Bach Flower remedies. These are liquid formulas made from the essence of combinations of flowers and plants, that balance emotional problems associated with illnesses. They can be found in the health food store or an herb shop. Choose the remedy for the mood or feelings that are being experienced, put ten drops under the tongue, hold them for 30 seconds, then swallow. Use as needed.
