All Natural Treatment for Acne

Acne breakouts can happen to people of all ages, and are typically treated using creams, toners and lotions that contain strong chemical ingredients. These harsh ingredients can irritate and inflame the skin, which can exacerbate acne and prevent the skin from becoming clear and healthy. Luckily, acne breakouts can be effectively cleared by applying a few natural remedies.

Natural Cleansers

Many commercial cleansers and soaps contain ingredients meant to dry up oils on oily and acne-prone skin. Using a cleanser like this will irritate the skin, and can cause the face to overproduce oils in order to compensate for the dryness that the soap causes. To cleanse the skin well, without causing dryness or irritation, use a non-comedogenic oil. A tablespoon of oil like castor oil, jojoba oil or olive oil should be massaged onto the skin for two minutes. Then, a steaming cloth should be draped across the skin to flush out the pores. After the cloth cools, the oil and impurities should be wiped away with the cloth. Cleanse with oils twice per day.

Natural Exfoliants

Exfoliating the skin removes the dead skin cells, which can clog the pores and lead to acne breakouts. Commercial exfoliants are often too abrasive and irritating to the skin, and can actually cause damage to the surface of the face. Natural exfoliants, like baking soda, are smooth and gentle on the skin. One tablespoon of baking soda should be combined with 1 tsp. of water, which will form a paste. The paste should then be massaged onto moistened skin for one minute, then rinsed off with water. Exfoliate with baking soda twice per week.

Natural Masks

Masks help draw out impurities and trapped oils in the pores, which helps maintain clear skin. One of the best masks for clearing the skin is a pure clay mask. Clay masks can be found at any health food store or natural foods market, and used once per week to purge the pores of impurities. Smooth 1 Tbsp. of clay onto the skin, and allow it to dry completely, then rinse it off with warm water.

Natural Spot Treatments

The most common commercial treatment for acne is benzoyl peroxide cream, which can cause side effects like redness and burning on the skin. A natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide cream is to apply a natural spot treatment, like tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream at clearing acne breakouts, but without the negative side effects. To use tea tree oil, dip a cotton swab into pure tea tree oil, then again into water to dilute it. Apply the tea tree oil onto the active acne blemishes up to three times per day.

Natural Facial Steaming

Facial steaming opens the pores, and further releases impurities and oils that can become trapped in the skin. A facial steam should be applied once per week to maintain clear skin. Fill a bowl with nearly boiling water, then lean over the bowl no nearer than 18 inches. Cover the head with a towel, and allow the steam to envelope the skin for 5 to 7 minutes. After the allotted time has passed, rinse the skin with cool water to close the pores again.
