Aging Treatment for Acne-Prone Skin
Aging skin is not immune to acne. Excessive dryness in the skin as we age leads to acne breakouts through skin irritation. Treating aging skin as well as acne can be a difficult task, as aging skin is more sensitive to the cleansers and creams that younger people use. All is not lost, because you can treat acne-prone, aging skin, reducing wrinkles and controlling breakouts simultaneously.
Exfoliate your skin using a gentle exfoliater that contains alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids. Both ingredients support skin's collagen production while helping keep skin clear from acne flare-ups. Over-exfoliation with harsher ingredients may irritate the skin, making acne worse, while using alpha and beta hydroxy acids limit irritation.
Wash your face with products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicyclic acid. These remove oil, bacteria and dead skin cells from pores to keep skin clearer. Use a low concentration of 2.5 percent or lower. Benzoyl peroxide in high dosages can worsen skin aging, but lower concentrations and short-term use are completely safe for mature skin.
Apply moisturizers that contain retinol. Retinol helps smooth out wrinkles and boost skin's collagen fiber production while clearing debris from pores and minimizing breakouts.
Drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day. This keeps skin plump and flushes out toxins that cause acne flare-ups.
Take antibiotics as prescribed by your physician. Antibiotics are normally prescribed for acne that does not clear up with topical treatments and is recurrent. Make sure you take the full course prescribed and do not skip a dose.
