No foods have been proven to cause acne, though that's not to say they don't. There are simply no scientific studies to prove otherwise. Maintaining a balanced diet and eating foods that help treat the symptoms of acne through boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation and bringing maximum health to the skin are a different matter. When looking at diets to treat acne, consider adding healthy foods to your daily intake.

Fruits & Vegetables

Adding fruits and vegetables to your diet is one of the best ways to get the antioxidants you need to boost your immune system, build your body's ability to repair and renew skin cells and fight free radicals. Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables as well as green vegetables are great sources of vitamin A, an antioxidant that helps to regulate oil production within the skin and fight free radicals. A deficiency in vitamin A is also known to cause acne.

Eggs

Eating hard or soft-boiled eggs a couple of times per week provides the body with a number of vitamins essential to boosting the skin's health. Eggs are a source for high doses of vitamins B2, B3 and Zinc. Deficiencies in these vitamins and in zinc may contribute to acne.

Fish

Fish such as salmon, halibut, tuna and other seafood are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are most commonly associated with the reduction of heart disease, but they also contain strong anti-inflammatory properties. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that omega-3 fatty acids are not produced within the body and must be consumed to get their benefits. A symptom of an omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is dry skin. Dry skin can lead to shedding of excess skin cells, which clogs pores and causes acne.

Water

Try to drink a minimum of eight 8-oz. glasses of water per day. This may be advice you've heard before, but it's important to the health of your skin. Keeping your skin cells hydrated is essential in order to enable them to fight off infection and prevent them from drying and flaking. Water helps to flush all the toxins away from the skin and out of the body.
