Acne Treatments Without Using Medicines

Acne breakouts are typically treated with medicines, such as benzoyl peroxide creams, which contain harsh chemicals that are designed to dry up pustules and kill off acne-causing bacteria on the skin. While some people can use these medicines without experiencing side effects, many people can have a reaction from using these strong acne medicines, such as peeling, burning and redness. Luckily, acne pustules can be cleared by using a few natural methods that eliminate the need for medicines.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a highly alkaline substance that kills off acne-causing bacteria, and can be applied to the skin as both a facial exfoliant and skin toner to clear acne. To use baking soda as a facial exfoliant, mix together 2 tbsp. of baking soda with enough water to form a soft paste. Massage this paste gently onto moistened skin for two minutes, then rinse the skin clean with water. This exfoliant can be used twice weekly to removed pore-clogging dead skin cells and eliminate acne-causing bacteria. To use baking soda as a toner, fill an empty spray bottle with 8 oz. of water, and mix into it 1 tsp. of baking soda. Spray it onto clean skin and allow the skin to air dry. The baking soda toner can be used daily to eliminate acne-causing bacteria on the skin's surface.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an effective antimicrobial oil that is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide creams at drying up pustules and killing off bacteria that cause acne, according to a study by the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Australia and published in the "Medical Journal of Australia." Tea tree oil is extracted from the Australian tea tree plant and bottled in its pure form, and must be diluted before applying it to the skin. To dilute tea tree oil for application, dip a cotton swab into pure tea tree oil, then dip the swab quickly in and out of water. Spread the diluted tea tree oil onto the active acne breakouts, up to three times per day.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a highly purgative and non-comedogenic oil that can be used to clear out the pores of the skin without clogging them. Since oil bonds to oil more effectively than to water or soap, using an oil to flush out the pores can create clear skin that remains unclogged. To clean out the pores using castor oil, spread 2 tbsp. of the oil onto the skin, and massage it in deeply using the fingertips. After two minutes, lay a steaming hot washcloth over the skin. This will cause the steam to open up the pores, releasing trapped oils and impurities. Once the washcloth cools down completely, use it to wipe off the castor oil and substances that were flushed out of the pores. Clearing the pores with castor oil can be used to treat acne breakouts three times a week.
