Acne is not an uncommon problem, but that doesn't make it any less of a problem. Acne can be very painful and embarrassing for the person suffering from the condition. For some, the use of acne medications or creams is not an option. There are many remedies for acne that are natural and can be done with minimal effort.

Vitamin and Mineral Treatments

Using niacin, Vitamin A and Vitamin E together can be effective to treat acne. It is recommended to consume the following supplements daily for a month: 100 mg of niacin three times a day, 50,000 international units of Vitamin A three times a day and 400 mg of Vitamin E once a day.

Taking zinc supplements is another effective method for some people. Zinc supplements are found in capsule and tablet form, and the recommended usage is three doses daily of 50 mg. If it is not possible to find supplements in the correct dosage amount, it is recommended to use tablets that are scored so they can be cut in half. A person suffering from acne should take the doses for up to a month, or until there is a noticeable improvement, then reduce the dosage amount to 25 mg.

Remedies From the Kitchen

There are some remedies for acne that have been discovered using foods that are commonly found in the kitchen. One remedy involves applying lemon juice directly to the existing acne for a simple, effective treatment. For a slightly more complicated preventive treatment, a person suffering from ance should grate a cucumber and apply it to the face for 15 to 20 minutes. A person could also consider mixing 1 tsp. of coriander juice or mint juice with a pinch of turmeric and apply it to the face after washing and before going to bed for the night.


Although the thought of smelling like garlic may be worrisome, garlic has been shown to be very effective in treating skin irregularities, including acne. Rubbing garlic directly on existing acne three times a day can effectively reduce the amount of acne. For tougher acne, a person should ingest three seeds of garlic daily for one month to receive optimal results.


Once a person has successfully treated existing acne (and even during treatment), he should take measures to help prevent more breakouts. Recommendations include limiting skin washing to twice a day with a gentle cleanser, as excessive washing can dry and damage the skin.

It is also recommended to avoid wearing heavy cosmetics, sunscreen or other products that can clog the pores, and to wash off makeup before going to bed. Wearing clothing that is looser fitting also helps to prevent trapped moisture and irritation. Taking a shower after doing an activity that is strenuous helps to remove excess oil and dirt from the skin. Using lotions containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as the active ingredient is helpful. When possible, a person should avoid resting his hand, telephone receivers or other objects against the face. Finally, avoiding picking or squeezing acne is a must because this can cause infections and scarring.
