Acne Treatment Gel Cream
Acne results when pores become blocked by an oily substance known as sebum. Bacteria in the pores can cause the pores to become inflamed and erupt into pustules. Topical medications in the form of gels and creams are applied directly to the skin to treat acne. Severe cases of acne may require prescription medication.
Topical antimicrobials treat acne by inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes.) This species of bacteria is a normal inhabitant of human skin that usually doesn't cause any problems. However, colonies of P. acnes can grow rapidly in hair follicles that contain sebum. Antimicrobial agents are frequently combined with other types of medication.
Some antimicrobial agents may also be able to treat the inflammation of acne. These topical applications slow the rate at which skin cells are shed, which can reduce inflammation. Azelaic acid and clindamycin are common prescription medications of this type. They are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects of azelaic acid are lightening and dryness of the skin.
Several non-prescription creams and gels are available for the treatment of acne. The most common ingredient in these topical applications is benzoyl peroxide. This medication is an antimicrobial agent and doesn't have any anti-inflammatory capability. Benzoyl peroxide increases the amount of oxygen within the pores inhabited by colonies of P. acnes. This is an effective method of eradicating the bacteria because P. acnes prefers conditions of low oxygen.
Acne gels and cream may also work by helping to clear the clogged pores. Sodium sulfacetamide is frequently the active ingredient in these types of medication. Products that contain this drug commonly contain sulfur, which can give them an unpleasant smell and gritty texture.
Retinoids are a class of chemicals related to vitamin A. They are commonly used in acne medication to unclog the pores. Retinoids may also be effective in improving the appearance of aged skin and fine wrinkles. The primary adverse side effects of acne medication that contains retinoids are irritation and increased sensitivity to the sun.
