Acne Solutions Tips

When your pores are clogged and infected, pimples form and you have the skin condition known as acne. Acne is most common on the shoulders and face, according to the National Institutes of Health, but may appear anywhere and can affect your comfort and self-esteem. Don't let acne ruin your life. Several tips and strategies can help limit acne and restore your skin's natural health.

Washing

Wash your skin twice daily or after heavy sweating, recommends the American Academy of Dermatology. When you wash, use a gentle, alcohol-free skin cleanser and your fingers. Avoid using a cleanser with exfoliants or scrubbing at the acne with a washcloth, as this may irritate your skin and make your acne worse. After applying the cleanser, rinse it away with lukewarm water.

Styling Products

Gels and hairsprays can get onto your skin, clogging pores and irritating your skin. If you use such products, keep them away from your face as much as possible. For example, shield your forehead with your hand while applying hairspray, or style your hair back and away from your face so that the gel in your hair doesn't rub onto your temples or cheeks.

Skin Care Products

When using makeup, moisturizer and other skin care products, the University of Maryland Medical Center advises only using those labeled "non-comedogenic" and "water-based." Anything else may plug up the pores in your skin and worsen acne.

Topical Treatments

Try using over-the-counter acne treatments before using prescription medications. The National Institutes of Health recommend any acne product formulated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Such chemicals help dry up the oil on your skin, improve skin cell turnover and kill the bacteria that cause acne.

Prescription Acne Drugs

Serious acne, such as cystic acne, may need prescription drug treatment. One of the best prescription drugs for severe acne is isotretinoin, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Not only does it help resolve acne, but it also helps prevent acne scarring.
