Acne Solutions Emergency Gel Lotion Ingredients

Acne Solutions Emergency Gel Lotion is an anti-acne treatment sold by Clinique and costs about $15 as of March 2010. Along with water, there are nine ingredients that make up the formula. It combines two well-known anti-acne agents in lower concentrations than when they are used separately. These two medications can give some consumers a better result than one agent alone.

Salicylic Acid

There is a 1.5 percent solution of salicylic acid in this product. Obtained from willow tree bark, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxyl acid, or BHA. It is used in many personal-care items, including mouthwash, sunscreen, skin products and hair-care products. In acne products, it has a use as an exfoliant with the ability to slough off dead skin cells and as an anti-acne treatment with the ability to reduce the severity of breakouts.

Benzoyl Peroxide

With a 1 percent solution of benzoyl peroxide, this emergency gel combines two acne fighters for optimal blemish fighting. Benzoyl peroxide has been found to be effective by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce blemishes on skin. With the FDA's safety rating of GRAS, or generally regarded as safe, it is cleared for over-the-counter acne remedies.

Dipropylene Glycol

Dipropylene glycol is used in personal-care products and in cosmetics as a viscosity decreaser and as a solvent. Viscosity decreasers make the formula less thick, and solvents help break down other ingredients in the mix. It has been deemed safe to use in cosmetics by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, otherwise known as the CIR.

Dehydroxanthan Gum

Dehydroxanthan gum is made from dehydrating xanthan gum. It is used to control the thickness of a product and as a stabilizer for emulsions.

Salix Alba Bark Extract

Salix alba, or willow tree, bark extract is added to use as an antiseptic and an astringent. In skin-care products and acne products, it is used to clean the skin of debris and toxins. It helps flush bacteria off the skin.

Benzyl Alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is FDA-recognized as safe for inclusion and is added for fragrance, as a preservative and as a viscosity decreaser. It lowers the thickness of the product while keeping it fresh from spoilage longer.

Triclosan is a preservative that helps guard against bacteria formation. It can help against both gram-positive (odor causing) and gram-negative bacteria.

Tetrasodium EDTA

This additive helps keep the formula from getting rancid and keeps fragrance items from spoiling. It works by binding with metal ions in the compounds.

The parabens are a group of agents that come from para-aminobenzoic acid. These are widely used in many types of cosmetics and personal-care products. They are active preservatives that make the formula less likely to spoil, reduce the growth of yeast and mold, and prevent some forms of bacteria from growing. It has been deemed GRAS by the FDA.
