Acne Solution & Treatment

Overview

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne affects about 17 million Americans, affecting approximately 85 percent of teenagers. There is an array of acne treatment options available on the market.

Cleansers

There are a variety of over-the-counter cleansers to treat acne but before you can choose one, it's imperative to understand how each product works and the risks associated with its uses. According to the Mayo Clinic, benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective OTC cleansers available to treat acne but there are side effects that accompany its use, such as dry skin and skin irritation. Salicylic acid is another alternative. Salicylic acid is not as strong as benzoyl peroxide but eliminates blackheads and whiteheads. Alpha hydroxy acids are derived from fruits that contain sugars and reduces the appearance of acne scars and promotes new skin growth.

Creams vs. Lotions

There are topical creams and lotions that can be applied to your skin, but selecting the correct product is key in combating acne. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends using cream-based products for those who suffer from dry skin, whereas lotions are recommended for those who suffer from oily skin.

Cosmetics

For women who wear cosmetics, the Mayo Clinic recommends using water-based products or products labeled "oil-free" or "noncomedogenic." These terms mean the cosmetic will not clog pores, which is important when treating and preventing acne. Heavy, greasy or oily cosmetics can cause pores to become clogged, which will make your acne worse and promote future breakouts.

Lifestyle and Home Remedies

Avoid products that are abrasive or contain beads or are alcohol based. Masks, astringents and facial scrubs are not recommended. According to the Mayo Clinic, these products can cause skin irritation that will only make acne worse. Avoid articles of clothing such as hats or sweatbands, as well as telephone receivers or your hands from touching your face. Articles of clothing can trap sweat and oil, which can clog your pores, and when other items come into contact with your skin, it can transfer dirt, debris and bacteria.

Misconceptions

Acne solutions do not typically work immediately. According to the Mayo Clinic, it may take up to eight weeks to see noticeable results. The Mayo Clinic also advises that you need to be patient. If your current acne medications are not working properly or causing skin irritation or allergic reactions, consult your dermatologist for a different treatment plan.
