Acne is usually treated with strong chemical creams and lotions, but sometimes these treatments can be too harsh on the skin and can cause, itching, redness, peeling and irritation. Fortunately, acne-covered skin can be repaired by applying a few natural treatments that will clear the skin without irritating it.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural antimicrobial and antibacterial oil that is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide creams at clearing up acne pustules. Tea tree oil is produced by extracting oil from the Australian tea tree plant, then bottling the pure oil for use. Although tea tree oil is natural and gentle on the skin, some people can experience a cooling sensation that feels unpleasant. To avoid this, tea tree oil can be diluted before use by dipping a cotton swab into tea tree oil, then again into water. Tea tree oil can be applied to the skin up to five times per day to clear acne breakouts. Avoid applying tea tree oil to the delicate skin near the eyes.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is a natural mixture created from the Calamine mineral, which can dry up blisters and reduce inflammation on the skin. Although most people only use Calamine lotion to treat chicken pox blisters or poison ivy rashes, it can also be used to effectively treat acne pustules and cysts. Calamine is gentle enough to be applied as an overnight treatment as well, and can be left on the skin for up to 10 hours. To use Calamine lotion on acne, dip a cotton swab into the lotion, then dab it onto the breakouts. Allow it to dry, and re-apply as needed.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an alkaline substance that helps slough away dead skin cells that can clog the pores, without damaging or irritating the skin. Baking soda can be used as a facial scrub or as a toner. To use baking soda as a scrub, 1 to 2 tbsp. should be combined with 1 tsp. of water, massaged onto the skin for two minutes, then rinsed off with warm water. The skin can be exfoliated with the baking soda scrub twice per week. To use baking soda as a toner, an empty spray bottle should be filled with water and 1 tsp. of baking soda. The face can be sprayed with the baking soda toner twice per day after cleansing.
