Overview

When you suffer from acne, it's important to not only treat active breakouts, but prevent future recurrences. Treating acne successfully takes time, typically an average of four to eight weeks, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Consult a dermatologist if your acne is severe. He'll likely recommend aggressive treatments, including prescription medications such as birth control pills, isotretinoin and antibiotics, medications often used to treat serious cases of acne.

Step 1

Wash your face gently. Use a mild cleanser that does not contain oil. Cleanse the face only twice a day, since excessive washing and scrubbing only irritates the skin. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel.

Step 2

Apply a topical acne treatment to clean and dry skin. Use a product that contains benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. To reduce acne breakouts on all areas of the skin, apply to the entire face, not just the visible blemishes. Use the product twice daily.

Step 3

Change your diet. Oily foods, such as fried meals, can leave excess oil on the face and worsen acne. Instead, prepare foods using healthier cooking methods, such as baking and grilling.

Step 4

Wear your hair pulled back to avoid transferring oil from your hair to your face.

Step 5

Reduce blemishes by only wearing skin care products and cosmetics labeled oil-free or non-comedogenic. Oil-based products clog pores and can lead to acne breakouts. Some cosmetics and skin care products contain acne medications, and often contain salicylic acid, which reduces oil on the skin by promoting cell turnover.
