Acne Prevention Techniques

Acne is a common skin condition that often leads to pimples. The disease is typically associated with teenagers, but it can affect children and adults just the same. As is typical with any type of condition, it is much better to prevent acne than having to treat it after the fact. Severe cases of acne may leave dark spots or scars on the skin. By preventing it before it starts, these problems can be avoided.

Clean the Skin Most Prone to Acne

Thoroughly cleansing the areas of your skin that are most prone to acne two times daily is a helpful way to prevent the onset of acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. Using gentle skin products that are water-based and free of oil to clean your skin helps get rid of dead skin cells while eliminating excessive amounts of oil. It is important to note that, while it is important to make sure your skin is clean, you can have too much of a good thing. Your skin may become red and irritated if you wash too frequently.

Choose Your Makeup Wisely

Many people believe that wearing makeup automatically clogs your pores, leading to acne breakouts. This could not be further from the truth, assuming you make your makeup choices wisely. According to TeensHealth, it is perfectly safe to wear makeup as long as it is labeled as noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic. If you wear concealer, many brands have started to add salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, both of which work to prevent acne. If you notice that the makeup you choose is irritating your skin, you may want to speak with your doctor to see if you may be allergic to an ingredient found in the makeup.

Avoid Tanning

Many people use tanning as a temporary way to hide acne, although this can often make the condition worst, according to My Student Health Zone. Exposing your skin to excessive amounts of sun or the ultraviolet rays found in tanning beds, your skin may become irritated, dry and more susceptible to future breakouts. When going out in the sun, you can protect your skin by wearing a hat that shades your face and applying a SPF 15 or above sunscreen. You can prevent your pores from clogging by choosing a sunscreen that is labeled nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic.
