Acne Medications That Cause Sterility

Acne Medications That Cause Sterility

While acne medications can cause many side efffects, sterility has not been proven to be one of them, according to dermatologists and scientists. Some drugs have been associated with a decrease in sperm count and motility in animal studies, while others can cause severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Always discuss concerns about side effects related to acne medications with your medical practitioner.

Minocycline

Minocycline, an antibiotic used to treat acne, has caused a drop in sperm count or motility in some studies done using rats. However, another study conducted by the Baylor College of Medicine and reported at the 68th annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology found no increase in sperm abnormalities in men taking 1 mg/kg of minocycline for 12 weeks compared with those taking a placebo. Discuss possible side effects with your physician before taking this drug to treat acne.

Retin-A

Retina-A, a drug derived from vitamin A, is often prescribed to treat severe acne. Retina-A has a number of potentially serious side effects, including on fertility. A study using rats given four times the normal human dose showed a slight decrease in sperm counts and motility but the decrease was not statistically significant. If you're concerned about potential side effects, discuss with your health care provider.

Oral Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives are used to treat female acne as well as to prevent pregnancy. Oral contraceptives will prevent pregnancy in 99 percent of cases if taken as prescribed, but the effect ends once you stop taking the drug. It may take up to three months for your period to start again after taking oral contraceptives.
