According to the Mayo Clinic, acne is commonly caused by hormonal changes, over-productive oil glands on the skin and irregular shedding of dead skin follicles. While most acne does not leave scars afterward, some severe cases can leave deep scars that can be embarrassing. However, there are some home remedies for healing and preventing these acne-induced scars. While proponents of these remedies claim that they work, the FDA does not back these claims, so you should speak with your doctor or dermatologist before trying them out.

Rose Water, Shea Butter and Rosemary Essential Oil

According to Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," a mixture of rose water, shea butter and rosemary essential oil can help heal old acne scars and prevent new scarring as acne begins to heal.

To use rose water, shea butter and rosemary essential oil, combine 1/4 cup all-natural rose water with 2 tbsp. shea butter and 1/4 tsp. rosemary essential oil in a small measuring cup or bowl.

Stir with a stirrer or whisk and apply a thin layer to the affected area. Leave the mixture on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water and apply your regular moisturizer. There is no need to wash your skin with soap after using this mixture unless you notice irritation.

The treatment can be used daily as long as it does not bother your skin, and unused portions can be stored in the refrigerator for about five days.

Lemon Juice, Jojoba Oil and Avocado Oil

According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," a mixture of lemon juice, jojoba oil and avocado can be applied to the skin to help heal and prevent acne scars.

Mix 2 tbsp. lemon juice, 2 tbsp. jojoba oil and 1 tbsp. avocado oil in a small container with a tight-fitting lid. Shake vigorously or stir the mixture to thoroughly combine all ingredients. Gently massage a small amount of the mixture into the affected area and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing with cool water and washing the skin with a gentle cleanser to remove the sugars from the lemon juice.

Apply your regular moisturizer after washing your face. This treatment can be used up to twice daily as long as no irritation occurs. Unused portions of the mixture can be kept in the refrigerator for two or three days.

Cocoa Butter and Baking Soda

According to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: The Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Foods, and Home Remedies since 1939," a mixture of cocoa butter and baking soda can be applied topically to the skin to help prevent acne scars from forming right after acne clears. This will also help old scars to heal.

To use cocoa butter and baking soda on the skin, mix 2 tbsp. cocoa butter and 1 tsp. baking soda in a small container. Apply the mixture to the skin in a thick layer and scrub gently for about five minutes before rinsing the skin with cool water. There is no need to wash your skin with a cleanser after using this treatment as long as irritation does not occur.

Unused portions can be stored in the refrigerator, but the mixture should be brought back to room temperature before using it.
