Acne Help for Extra-Sensitive Skin
When you have sensitive skin, you are likely to find that certain acne treatment products cause your skin to redden and feel irritated. Chemical peels, alpha-hydroxy acids and microdermabrasion may not be recommended by a dermatologist if you have sensitive skin. Gentle skin care treatment is needed for sensitive skin with acne.
Wash your face. Cleanse twice a day with a mild cleanser. If you have sensitive skin and are treating acne, avoid scrubbing your face or frequent washing. Look for cleansers manufactured for sensitive skin that do not contain any alcohol.
Change the type of makeup that you use. The oil found in skin care products can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. Choose versions labeled oil free or noncomedogenic. If products are noncomedogenic, it means that they have been tested and found not to clog the pores.
Keep objects away from your face. If you have sensitive skin, you may be prone to pimples when your hair or hands touch your face.
Apply a water-based, over-the-counter acne topical treatment. According to MotherNature.com, water-based gels are less likely to irritate the skin. Look for a product with benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. To clear up breakouts, it is typically recommended by the manufacturer to use the product twice a day. However, if you have sensitive skin, apply the product only once a day. If you don't develop a reaction, you can increase to twice daily usage.
Use a moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher. Acne treatments can cause heightened skin sensitivity, especially from sun exposure. Slather on a daily moisturizer with SPF protection each morning to prevent your skin from drying out and to protect it from the sun.
Speak with a dermatologist. If you are unable to get rid of your acne on your own, oral medications and other treatment options are available that can help if you have acne and sensitive skin.
