If you are distressed by recurring pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, know that you are not alone in your misery. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. An estimated 45 million people are battling blemishes. Acne often tends to heal at a snail's pace, and just when you think one pimple has cleared, another quickly replaces it. Acne can damage your skin and your self-confidence.

Skin Effects

Though acne can crop up on your back, chest, shoulders and neck, it often develops on your face where it is difficult to cover up. Blemishes can steal away the peaches and cream complexion you may have been accustomed to. Acne can cause your skin to look rough, dry and patchy. Proper treatment is necessary so your skin doesn't suffer permanent damaged.

Scarring

One of the most unfortunate and often preventable side effects of acne is scarring, mostly due to its relative permanency. Scars are more likely to develop when cysts form on your skin. Cysts develop when the sebaceous glands become plugged. Sebaceous glands emit an oily substance called sebum, which is necessary to keep your hair and skin lubricated. Cysts are painful, boil-like lumps underneath the surface of the skin. They are often filled with pus, fluid or air.

Tarnished Self Image

The psychological impact of acne has not been fully recognized until recently, according to the AAD. This may be due to the fact that acne is not a life threatening condition and will eventually pass. Nevertheless, acne can cause embarrassment, social withdrawal and lowered self-esteem. Some people may try to hide their blemishes by growing their hair out.

Depression

Some acne suffers may spiral downward into clinical depression because of the shame and humiliation they may feel about their skin condition. Symptoms of depression can include feelings of unworthiness, loss of appetite, crying spells, low energy and insomnia.
