Acne is one of the most common skin problems that affects people from the time they hit puberty until old age. Acne is believed to be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, overactive sebaceous glands, hygiene, bacteria and problems shedding skin. When acne occurs, the first line of treatment is typically an over-the-counter acne cream. There are several common ingredients in acne creams.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide has been on the market the longest in regards to acne treatment creams. Benzoyl peroxide targets a specific type of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes, which is believed to play a role in the development of acne. Benzoyl peroxide works by flooding the pores with oxygen. Since P. acnes cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment, the bacteria is killed.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is commonly found in acne creams. Salicylic acid promotes the healthy shedding of skin cells. This helps prevent dead skin cells from combining with the sebum on your skin and blocking your pores.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is also seen in acne skincare cream and works similar to salicylic acid. Derived from fermented milk, lactic acid helps improve the skin's ability to shed dead skin cells, resulting in less material to block the skin's pores.

Sulfur

Sulfur is not as common as other active ingredients in acne creams, but may still be found in some treatments. Sulfur works by drying out the skin, causing it to peel. The peeling skin helps dislodge and remove dirt and dead skin cells, which can assist in cleaning out acne-prone pores.

Resorcinol

Resorcinol may also be present in acne cream treatments. Resorcinol is designed to help break down hard or rough skin. This is particularly good for help breaking down blackheads and whiteheads. Resorcinol is rarely used alone in an acne cream, and is usually combined with other active acne-fighting ingredients.
