Acne Control for the Skin
Acne occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much sebum. An excess of this oily substance can block the pores and cause them to become inflamed. Acne can lead to scarring if the damage to your skin doesn't heal quickly. You can perform a number of treatments at home to control the damage caused by acne. These primarily consist of skin maintenance and medication.
Your skin should be washed at least twice each day. Use a gentle soap and rinse with warm water to help keep your skin clear. Refrain from popping or squeezing the pustules caused by acne. This will make your skin take longer to heal, which can lead to scarring.
Topical acne medication is available in the form of lotions, oils and creams. These medications contain ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide, which provides oxygen to the pores in the skin. This can inhibit the growth of bacteria, which can contribute to the skin damage caused by acne.
Shaving can exacerbate acne and prevent it from healing. Soak your beard with warm water and apply shaving gel to soften your beard when you must shave. Use a light touch and shave in the direction of hair growth. These techniques will reduce the chances of nicking a blemish, which can cause additional damage to your skin.
Avoid the sun as much as possible. Exposure to the sun may make your acne less noticeable when it darkens your skin, but this is a temporary effect. The ultraviolet radiation from the skin can cause additional damage to your skin. This is especially likely when you use acne medication because it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun.
Astringents are substances that bind with the oil in your skin. They dry the skin, which can make acne worse in the long term. Use astringents sparingly and only to the oiliest parts of your skin.
