Acne Complex Vs. Proactiv
Acne can be extremely difficult to control -- many sufferers try multiple products in an effort to stop their breakouts and make their skin clear again. In response, skin product manufacturers such as Proactiv and Murad have developed treatment systems, usually containing three or more parts, to treat acne. Proactiv's 3-Step System and Murad's Acne Complex have gained popularity among consumers.
Teenagers normally get acne, but adults do, too. Acne results when you produce excessive skin oil, as many teens do, and when your skin sheds too many skin cells, according to MayoClinic.com. Unless you remove them, the oil and skin cells combine to clog your pores, and pimple-promoting bacteria can begin to grow behind the blockages. Both Proactiv and Acne Complex include active ingredients designed to interrupt this breakout cycle.
The Proactiv 3-Step System includes three products: Renewing Cleanser, Revitalizing Toner and Repairing Treatment. The cleanser and the repairing treatment both feature the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. Murad's Acne Complex includes Clarifying Cleanser, Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel and Skin Perfecting Lotion. The Clarifying Cleanser contains the active ingredient salicylic acid, while the Skin Perfecting Lotion contains arnica and hyaluronic acid, both moisturizers.
Both the benzoyl peroxide that serves as the active ingredient in Proactiv's 3-Step Solution and the salicylic acid in Acne Complex's system have a long track record of fighting acne. Drugs.com calls benzoyl peroxide an antimicrobial, which means it fights the bacteria that causes infection in acne. It also dries your skin. Salicylic acid makes the outer layer of your skin peel off, potentially clearing your clogged pores in the process, according to Drugs.com.
Both Proactiv 3-Step System and Murad Acne Complex can irritate your skin because of their active ingredients. The benzoyl peroxide in the Proactiv system can cause mild burning, tingling or stinging, and makes some people's skin very dry, according to Drugs.com. The salicylic acid in the Acne Complex system causes skin peeling and burning, which can be severe in some people.
As with any acne product or system, your results will depend on your individual skin type and reaction to the active ingredients. Both the Proactiv 3-Step System and Murad Acne Complex received mixed reviews. Proactiv reviewers protested the product's high price -- about $75 a month -- and some said it made their acne worse, not better. Others said it cleared their skin. Acne Complex reviewers also noted that product's price -- about $50 to $75 per month -- and some reported it made their acne worse, especially initially. Others reported good results.
