Acne can cause the skin to erupt in pustules, papules, blackheads and cysts that can make the skin painful and blotchy in appearance. Many people attempt to clear their skin by applying acne-fighting products, such as creams, lotions, soaps and toners, but often apply these products wrong. In order to clear the skin, and keep it that way, it is necessary to use acne-fighting products in the proper way. By following this regimen, the skin will remain clear as well as supple.

Soap for Sensitive Skin Types

Many soaps on the market touted to treat acne usually contain ingredients that can cause the skin to become irritated or inflamed. For skin that is effected by acne breakouts, it can further exacerbate the condition by using a harsh soap. Instead of using a soap for acne-prone skin, it is important to use a soap designed for sensitive skin types that will clean the skin without irritating it. To use a sensitive skin soap, lather moistened skin twice per day gently with the fingers, then rinse the skin well with clean water. Use a light touch and do not scrub the skin, which can make acne worse.

Lower Strength Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Benzoyl peroxide cream is one of the most effective treatments for clearing acne on the skin, and is available in many different strengths, including 2.5 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent. While most people try to use the highest strength benzoyl peroxide cream to clear their skin, this can actually irritate the skin, leading to redness and even a chemical burn. It is important when using benzoyl peroxide cream to use only the lowest strength cream, which will clear acne without damaging the skin. Squeeze a pea-sized amount of the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream onto the fingers, and smooth it onto the skin gently until it soaks in completely. Repeat twice per day.

Oil-Free Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

When using a benzoyl peroxide cream it is important to follow it with an oil-free moisturizer designed for sensitive skin types. Using this types of moisturizer will keep the skin hydrated without re-clogging the pores or irritating the skin with chemical ingredients. Once the benzoyl peroxide cream has soaked into the skin, it is recommended to smooth a dime-sized amount of an oil-free moisturizer onto the face gently until the lotion has absorbed into the skin. Repeat twice per day after using the benzoyl peroxide cream.
